The music curriculum at my school is inspired by the belief that: Every child can learn music and that music-making and music literacy are for all.
First and foremost in this music education approach is the joy of making music. Music classes are a joyful, active experience for each child. Music materials are age-appropriate and high quality - creating a sense of wonder. Child-centered means children are led to discovering musical elements from the "inside-out". Music experiences come first, then students participate fully in discovering music literacy. (Just as we learn to speak our mother tongue before we learn to read and write it.) What does "music literacy" really mean? We read written music and ~ * Can hear it inside our head and * Can sing it We listen to music and ~ * Can see it inside our mind and * Are able to write it on the music staff
Music literacy is truly possessing a "seeing ear" and a "hearing eye" - The sounds connect to the symbols.
This music education approach is often called the Kodály Concept or the Kodály Method.
