This is a Jupiter Prodigy flute, designed for younger/smaller students. The headjoint is curved, bringing the keys closer to the body. The keys have touch-plates which are designed to accomodate smaller hands.

My daughter is age 7 in this picture. She initially explored flute playing on a plastic Yamaha fife at age 6. This is also an excellent choice for the very young who are interested in flute. Producing sound is the same as producing a flute sound, and although there are no keys on the fife, the fingerings are the same as flute fingerings. The Yamaha fife is quite inexpensive, so one does not need to worry about a young child damaging an expensive instrument.
